The City of Timmins, Ontario, Canada, commended Canada Nickel Co., Toronto, Canada, for its recently announced Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Wabun Tribal Council and Taykwa Tagamou Nation Nation, Timminspress.com reports.
“We’re advancing rapidly, what we believe will be one of the world’s largest nickel cobalt projects, with a real opportunity to produce NetZero carbon nickel that the electric vehicle market is looking for,” Mark Selby, chairman and chief executive officer of Canada Nickel, said during a presentation hosted by the Timmins Chamber in September.
Earlier this year, Canada Nickel Company announced the creation of a wholly-owned subsidiary called NetZero Metals Inc. which will begin research and development into a processing facility to be located a short drive from Timmins. The goal of this facility will be the production of zero-carbon nickel, cobalt and iron products.
Timmins Mayor George Pirie said, “These MOUs are great news for the region. These mutually beneficial business arrangements will help move the Crawford Nickel-Cobalt Sulphide project closer to permitting, and promises to create direct mining jobs and to sustain jobs in our mining supply industry.
“These MOUs are excellent examples of First Nation-industry partnerships that respect traditional territory. These are excellent agreements which are examples of Indigenous ownership which we have been advocating for. They fit with the city’s Indigenous philosophy and of course our diversification goals.”
The project site is about 40 kilometres north of the city. Selby, in his presentation, said both Canada Nickel and NetZero will share employees for the time being, but as developments move forward, more positions will be created.
