Tesla has introduced a version of its Wallbox Level 2 home charger with support for J1772 as well as Tesla’s own NACS. The Universal Wall Connector will begin shipping in October. Tesla app features will be available starting later his year.
The Universal Wall Connector is essentially identical to the NACS-only Wall Connector: up to up to 11.5 kW / 48 amp output from a 60 amp breaker circuit; Wi-Fi connectivity for over-the-air updates; power-share with up to six Wall Connectors; 24-foot cable. The physical difference is the integration of the J1772 adapter on the NACS handle.
The standard NACS handle fits into the J1772 adapter, with the entire handle unit then being housed in the side of the Wallbox. Pressing a button on the top of the handle keeps the J1772 adapter on the handle unit for charging non-Tesla EVs; simply pulling on the handle when seated in the Wallbox frees the NACS connector from the adapter for use with Tesla vehicles.
The other difference is price: $475 for the NAVS-only Wall Connector, $595 for the Universal Wall Connector.
