Amprius Technologies, Inc., a leader in next-generation lithium-ion batteries with its Silicon Anode Platform, celebrated its ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, December 14, 2023. At the event, Amprius showcased its expanded production line in Fremont, California, known as Amprius Lab, for customers, investors, and partners.
Through the commissioning of its proprietary anode production line, Amprius is increasing its capacity by ten times at its Fremont facility, moving the Company from kWh to MWh scale of production. The additional capacity will serve existing customers, including Airbus, AeroVironment, BAE Systems and Teledyne FLIR, as well as supply the backlog of new customers seeking product in 2024. The factory will manufacture industry leading, high-energy batteries, expected to deliver energy densities of over 500 Wh/kg and 1300 Wh/L, and high-power batteries with discharge rates as high as 10C.
During the event, several of Amprius’ current partners, including AALTO Airbus, AeroVironment and CENTCOM presented on the importance of Amprius’ next-generation technology on applications across aviation, HAPS (High-altitude platform systems), and defense. In addition, equipment OEM centrotherm presented on the state of our 100% silicon anode mass production equipment, currently used for commodity solar cell manufacturing, and the associated scale-up and cost-down achieved in that sector historically. And finally, Teledyne FLIR provided a customer demonstration of the Black Hornet 4, which has Amprius’ high-performance batteries designed into it.
Guests were also able to engage with Amprius executives on the expansion’s impact and tour the state-of-the-art manufacturing line, which features all-new assembly and dry rooms as well as the same mass production anode equipment technology planned for the GWh-scale factory.
“The expansion of our Fremont facility is an important milestone for our business as we significantly bolster our capacity to meet the increasing demands of our esteemed customers while at the same time serving more customers,” said Dr. Kang Sun, CEO of Amprius. “As we implement advanced manufacturing processes for our proprietary silicon anode cell production, we’ll be able to lay the foundation for our gigawatt-scale factory that we expect to be operational in 2025.”
Amprius continues to expand its advanced manufacturing capabilities to meet the ever-increasing demand for its high-performance batteries. Amprius remains well positioned to support the fast-growing aviation and, eventually, mainstream electric vehicle markets, estimated to be collectively over $100 billion of battery demand by 2025.
“Amprius’ batteries play a key role in Fremont’s dedication to technological innovation, especially in electric mobility, where our community boasts one of the highest densities of EV chargers per zip code,” said Fremont Mayor Lily Mei. “The decision by Amprius to expand within Fremont highlights our city’s commitment to pioneering next-generation technologies that are shaping the future of sustainable transportation.”
