Daimler Buses is now temporarily offering a digital service package as a free option for all newly delivered buses and coaches. The system will allow for vehicle and battery monitoring, which is to help extend battery life and maximize fleet utility.
The service will apply to the newly delivered battery-electric eCitaro, eCitaro fuel cell, and later, also the eIntouro. However, the offer differs between models: Customers can use the digital services free of charge for six years. At the end of the term, customers have the option of continuing to use the services at a reduced package price. The service is also available for Mercedes-Benz and Setra diesel vehicles, however, here, the offer only runs for three years.
Daimler Buses promises higher availability and a reduced total cost of operation (TCO) from the outset for users of the digital service. The system provides entry into “the digital service world” of Daimler Buses, which is to provide current data on vehicle condition, as well as energy consumption. Not only can the battery monitoring programme extend the service life of batteries, but a consumption overview of the entire fleet can be managed via Daimler Buses ‘Omniplus On’ monitor. The service also allows for maintenance requirements to be detected at an early stage and major damage or consequential damage to be avoided.
A key component of the Digital Services Package for electric buses is ‘Omniplus On Battery Monitoring.’ Daimler further specifies that the use of the Digital Services Package is voluntary and functions independently of vehicle operation. To use the digital services, the services must first be activated in the Omniplus On portal in the Omniplus On commerce area.
This is not Daimler Truck’s first foray into the field of vehicle software and services, and the company had even launched a joint venture with competitor Volvo towards the end of 2024. Beyond their partnership in the Milence truck charging joint venture, the companies intend to set the industry standard for a truck operating system and to offer the joint venture’s products to other commercial vehicle manufacturers. To this end, the joint venture will provide a joint developer platform on which its customers can develop their own software applications.
Daimler also opened a battery technology centre in 2024, whose expertise almost certainly found its way into the new battery management system.
