Form Energy Expands West Virginia Site to Boost Battery Production

Form Energy is expanding its operations in Weirton, West Virginia, to meet the growing demand for its iron-air batteries, bringing hundreds of new jobs to the region. The expansion project is underway at the former Weirton Steel mill site, where Form Energy is creating a new chapter focused on clean energy production.

“We are excited to begin expanding Form Factory 1, which will allow us to build even more iron-air batteries to support America’s future electric grid,” said Ted Wiley, Co-Founder, President, and COO of Form Energy. “We’re especially proud to do this from the site of the former Weirton Steel mill, which was once one of the largest steel producers in the world and shaped the America we know today.”

This expansion, which builds on the company’s ambitious growth goals, represents a meaningful blend of honoring Weirton’s industrial past and advancing sustainable technology.

The expansion follows news of Form Energy’s recent $405 million Series F financing round, led by T. Rowe Price. This funding will help scale the company’s manufacturing capacity and advance its mission to create reliable, multi-day energy storage solutions.

As part of the expansion, Form Energy is repurposing elements of the former steel mill, including parts of its old Stock Building, in both practical and cultural ways. Scrap steel will be saved for future artwork and employee gathering spaces, reinforcing the company’s commitment to honoring Weirton’s history. With the support of the local community and partners like GE Vernova, Form Energy’s West Virginia facility is set to become a hub for sustainable manufacturing in the Ohio River Valley.

“Form Energy took a place that looked rusty and dusty to everybody else and they looked through all of that and they found the inherent value of the people that live here and the people that work here – and we can’t be more appreciative for that opportunity,” added City Manager of Weirton Mike Adams. “Changing this site gives us and our community a lot to be proud of, and a lot to have hope for.”
