Global renewables developer Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV) has joined forces with energy storage developer AMP Tank Finland Oy to install a 60-MWh battery in Finland, just below the Arctic Circle.
The project will be the first joint endeavour between the two companies, FRV said on Tuesday, adding that this is the initial stage of a larger scheme that could potentially expand the battery site’s total capacity to 200 MWh. Plans for the second phase of the project are being discussed.
To be installed near the Fingrid Simojoki substation in Lapland, around 100 km below the Arctic Circle, the battery energy storage system (BESS) will deploy Sungrow’s PowerTitan technology based on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells. The first-phase facility will consist of 26 units, the installation of which is already underway across a 0.4-ha (1-acre) site.
The first-hase battery is planned to be commissioned in the first quarter of 2025.
“This project is a significant step forward in supporting Finland’s transition to a more renewable energy-focused grid [..],” said Tristan Higuero, Chief Business Development Officer at FRV.
