Israel’s Econergy energises 50-MW battery in Yorkshire

Israeli renewables-focused independent power producer Econergy Renewable Energy Ltd has successfully connected to the grid its 50-MW/102-MWh Swangate battery energy storage system in Yorkshire, UK.

The Israeli firm said on Thursday that phased electricity transmission has commenced and full transmission is expected in the coming weeks.

Swangate, also known as West Melton, is Econergy’s first battery entering into operations in the UK. The project was recently financed with around EUR 32 million (USD 35.3m) in debt from Goldman Sachs and has in place a long-term route-to-market agreement with the investment banking giant for the battery’s trading and optimisation.

Econergy, which operates in the UK and Poland and recently expanded into Italy and Romania, holds a pipeline of 10.6 GWh of energy storage projects in the development stages. The company’s British BESS pipeline consists of 26 projects with a combined capacity of 6.8 GWh, including 15 co-location projects.

In the third quarter of next year, it plans to commission a 82-MWh battery it is currently building in Dalmarnock, Scotland, and launch the construction of additional energy storage facilities and solar parks in the UK in 2024 and 2025.
