Liverpool orders 58 electric double-decker buses from ADL

The Liverpool City Region Combined Authority has ordered 58 Enviro400EV electric double-decker buses from British bus manufacturer Alexander Dennis (ADL). They will be delivered before the end of this year.

The Enviro400EV was designed to meet Transport for London (TfL) specifications. It comes standard with a 472kWh battery back, offering room for up to 87 passengers. It is also available with a smaller 354 kWh battery pack. The latter variant can transport up to 96 passengers. ADL does not say which version has been ordered for Liverpool.

However, it does mention that it has an energy consumption of “only  0.67kWh/km over the UK Bus Cycle” and offers “a market-leading 97% grid-to-wheel charging efficiency.”

Liverpool announced in September 2024 that it wanted to purchase 50 electric buses. While the city did not announce a make or model at the time, the Alexander Dennis Enviro400EV was a strong contender. Also, the city had ordered 20 fuel cell buses from ADL in 2021.

The new order of buses was purchased with financial help from the second tranche of the Department for Transport’s Zero-Emission Bus Regional Areas fund (ZEBRA 2). The total cost has not been communicated, but in 2024, the City of Liverpool said it had earmarked 26 million pounds for the purchase of 50 new electric double-decker buses.

“Buses are the backbone of our public transport network – around 80% of all public transport journeys in our region are taken by bus. But for too long, our communities have been left with a second-class service that simply doesn’t work for them,” said Steve Rotheram, Mayor of the Liverpool City Region. “That’s why we’re taking back control of our buses and putting the public back at the heart of public transport.”
