The second Hungarian plant’s launch marks a pivotal moment for Solus Advanced Materials, which has been recognized for its high-quality, customized battery foils. These foils are essential components in lithium-ion batteries, serving as current collectors in both the anode and cathode, and are crucial for battery performance, efficiency, and safety. The Tatabánya plant’s strategic location allows for competitive delivery times and stable supply to both domestic and international clients, solidifying the company’s position as the No. 1 market leader in battery foils in Europe.
Kwak Geun-man, CEO of Solus Advanced Materials, emphasized the significance of this development, stating, “With the commencement of mass production at the second Hungarian plant, we have expanded our production capacity, enabling more aggressive local market penetration.” This expansion is not just about increasing output but also about enhancing the company’s ability to meet the specific needs of its clients, which include leading battery manufacturers and automakers.
The company’s ambitions extend beyond Europe. Solus Advanced Materials is also making strides in North America, where it is establishing its first battery foil plant in Canada. The Canadian facility, which broke ground last year, recently secured incentives worth 150 billion won from the Quebec provincial government. This plant is expected to begin mass production in 2026 with an annual capacity of 25 thousand tons, aiming for a long-term goal of 63,000 tons per year. Combined with its European operations, Solus Advanced Materials aims to achieve a total annual production capacity of 163,000 tons across both continents.
Kwak highlighted the company’s global strategy, stating, “By establishing the only battery foil production base in Canada currently under construction, we aim to preemptively capture the North American market and solidify our market leadership globally.” This move is in line with the company’s broader strategy to leverage the rapid growth of the EV market, driven by increasing demand for efficient and high-capacity batteries.
Solus Advanced Materials’ aggressive expansion plans are set against the backdrop of the European Green Deal and other environmental policies aimed at reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable energy solutions. The company’s investments in battery foil production align with these goals, contributing to the broader effort to transition to cleaner energy sources and reduce the environmental impact of transportation.
