US DOE announces nearly $90 million in transportation funding

The U.S. Department of Energy announced the Fiscal Year 2025 Vehicle Technologies Office Program Wide funding program. This funding pot will award up to $88 million for projects that seek innovative transportation solutions for on- and off-road vehicles.

In a statement on its website, the US Department of Energy wrote: “[The] DOE is committed to pushing the frontiers of science and engineering, catalyzing domestic jobs through research, development, demonstration, and deployment, and ensuring affordable and low-emission energy is available to all communities in America. Topic areas under this funding opportunity will advance affordable and reliable energy innovation in mobility and improve U.S. competitiveness.”

The new funds, available for the 2025 fiscal year, will cover a total of 10 areas, including lithium-ion cell safety, lithium production, lithium-metal surface protection, Li-Ion batteries for electric trucks, battery module design for electric trucks, thermal management systems, farming vehicles, a vehicle life cycle analysis baseline, “Battery Busbar Joining,” which covers joining methods for foil-to-tab manufacturing, as well as EV workforce development and, finally, vehicle technology integration as an open topic.

The submission deadline for concept papers is on the first of April, 2025, while full applications may continue until June 18th. The expected time frame for award negotiations stands until February 2026.

It will be interesting to follow the development of the DOE programmes under the new US president, whose first actions so far have been focused on undoing the work of his predecessor, dropping funding for electric vehicles and charging infrastructure.
